Aerial and Field SAV Observations

On 7/19/10  while sampling the Virginia Potomac Embayments Dogue Creek was observered with large SAV beds on the northern and southern shores.  The secchi depth was 0.8 Meters.

On 7/19/10 sampling run DEQ notice a large bed in the upper embayment.  Most of the bed was visable above water but a large portion was below the surface.  Secchi depth was 1.3 Meter which was the bottom.  The embayment was very clear due to the SAVs.   We recorded a pH value of 9.4 S.U. [...]

Starting on around July 7, 2009 a large algae bloom has been going on in the Pohick Bay embayment.   Our continuous monitoring sonde has observed over 80% of the pHs values greater than 9 S.U.  for a three week period which has ended somewhere around July 26, 2009.

On August 3, 2009 aproximately 90% of entire tidal embayment is has SAVs present.

During our Continuous monitoring deployment/retrieval large mats of the filamentous algae where in the Occoquan embayment.  Last year we (DEQ) observed these same large mats in the Occoquan (Belmont Bay).
