February 19th, 2013 · No Comments

We had a good SAV year in the lower Chester last year (2012), with growth in some places where it had only been sparse in recent years. The waterfowl are liking it.

I have been to many of the usual places, and SAV acreage appears way up this year. Hail Creek, Durding Creek, Shipyard Creek, Bogles Cove, Church Creek and Frying Pan Cove all have good coverage, some in places (right bank of Hail Creek going up) not usually seen to have SAV. [...]

We have surveyed two of the spots around Eastern Neck so far-Durding and Hail Creeks.  Durding has very abundant SAV-more than I saw last year on the survey.  It extends from near the docks on the north shore, all the way around to the south shore, with several of the southwestern and [...]

I got into Strong’s Cove and Wilson’s Pond today. Both have good growth, particularly the east and south sides of the pond, with a canopy forming bed of elodea. The west and north sides have good but less dense growth. There is also some widely scattered ruppia and [...]

I will be sending a spreadsheet with waypoints and species in after the season. I will try to get in Wilson Pond and Church Creek proper in the next 10 days. In earlier surveys on the Bay side we saw heavy growth along the shore from the bridge south with [...]

Eastern Neck Narrows and Frying Pan Cove

August 20th, 2011 · No Comments

I surveyed the shoreline around Frying Pan and from Church Creek to the bridge on 8/20/2011.  SAV has returned there also, the most I have seen there in over 5 years.  From the bridge, as you go around the point from the narrows and enter Frying Pan there are patches of elodea and wigeon grass [...]

Matt Whitbeck of the USFWS and I surveyed Hail Creek on the river side of Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge on July 30. As we moved up the south side of the creek from Cedar Point, we found patches of wigeon grass and elodea at multiple locations, along with some small [...]

Terry Willis (Quad 026)
I surveyed Shipyard Creek (just south of Durding on Eastern Neck) for SAV. There were several patches of wigeon grass along the north shore and near the head of the creek where it narrows into the marsh. There was also some evidence (floating) of horned pondweed near the head. [...]

Bay Side of Eastern Neck-From Narrows to Ingleside

July 19th, 2011 · No Comments

The bay side of Eastern Neck from the narrows bridge to Ingleside Recreation Area was surveyed on 07/09/2011 with Matt Whitbeck of USFWS.  Growth appears to be better than last year, with patches of wigeon grass and redhead grass extending from the cove north of Tubby Cove along the shore almost to the bridge.  The [...]
